'Top Up TV Upgradeable'

'Yes' in this column signifies that the product in question has either: (a) passed through the DTG testing procedure for Top Up TV compliance (we obtain this information from the Top Up TV website, which we consider to be the authoritative source); or (b) the manufacturer claims that the product is Top Up TV compliant.

'No' in this column signifies either: (a) that the product in question does not appear in the Top Up TV compliance listing (this does not necessarily mean that the product in question will not be upgraded by the manufacturer in the future, or is not capable of being upgraded (although in some cases either or both of these may be the case); or (b) the manufacturer does not mention whether the product is Top Up TV compliant or not.

Please note that compliance is related to how up-to-date the software in your Freeview receiver - IDTV or set-top box - is. The Top Up TV site gives this information in its compliance listing.

'HD-Ready'

Until now, we have described an IDTV as HDTV-capable or HDTV-compliant if we believe that in principle it is theoretically capable of properly displaying high-definition transmissions broadcast in either the 720p or 1080i standards. See here for more on HDTV. This definition is, however, now out-of-date, since there is a so-called 'HD Ready' specification that European broadcasters and manufacturers have agreed between themselves. The flat-panel (LCD or Plasma or DLP) IDTV listings have now been revised to indicate whether or not receivers are HD-Ready compliant or not. Read the full 'HD Ready' specification, or read this FAQ to find out more. Meanwhile, if you're shopping out in the High Street, look for the 'HD Ready logo' (click here to see it - it's the small one on the right).
